Being Safe With Fuel

Oil is an essential commodity for many people. However, careless storage and incompetence can have devastating outcomes. Follow these 10 simple tips to become more knowledgeable about fuel safety and how to handle it correctly.

  1. Fuel is very flammable and therefore should be stored away from the main household, in a place where it is unlikely to come into contact with a naked flame. A garage or shed would be ideal.
  2. Always store fuel in a container especially designed for storing fuel. Don’t store fuel in empty bottles or cartons.
  3. Check your oil tank regularly for leaks. If your oil tank is leaking and manages to pollute a river or lake, legal action can be taken against you.
  4. It is advisable to fit your oil storage tank with a secure lock, with the increasing number of oil thefts across the country.
  5. Always use a pouring spout or a funnel when transferring fuel.
  6. If your clothing gets splashed with fuel, it is advisable to change them. You may come into contact with a naked flame later causing your clothing to catch fire.
  7. Never put fuel near your mouth, even the smallest intake can be fatal.
  8. It is advisable to have a CO2 fire extinguisher near to a fuel storage area.
  9. Have some fuel absorbents ready to clear a spillage immediately.
  10. If you have an oil spillage and don’t know what to do, call the Environment Agency on 0800 807 060. They will be able to give advice on the correct action to take.
