What Do I Need To Know About AdBlue?

What Is AdBlue?

AdBlue – also referred to as diesel exhaust fluid – is an aqueous urea solution that helps keep CO2 emissions down in heavy duty diesel vehicles. It is made of 32.5% high-purity solution and 67.5% of water that has been deionised. This diesel exhaust fluid is completely safe to handle and simply requires washing off it is spilt on your hands.

Diesel exhaust fluid is not a fuel or a fuel additive. It is a solution that has to be kept in a separate tank in your heavy duty vehicle. It is also a non-flammable and non-explosive fluid, so no special measures have to be taken to keep it protected during transit.

How Much AdBlue Do I Need?

This naturally will depend on how many heavy duty vehicles you and your business use and how far they tend to travel. In terms of national averages, diesel exhaust fluid makes up around 5% of the amount of diesel used. This roughly adds up to using five litres of diesel exhaust fluid for every 100 litres of diesel used, but this obviously can vary.

What’s The Best Way to Store AdBlue?

AdBlue should be kept out of direct sunlight and should be prevented from getting too hot or cold. It should also be kept in the sealed packaging in which it is delivered and stored in an area that has good ventilation. If you are able to keep it in appropriate conditions, then it can be stored for up to one year.

Do I Still Need AdBlue Now Britain Is Leaving The EU?

While Britain has voted to leave the European Union, it is still important that you use diesel exhaust fluid. The European law will remain in place for the next two years while the British government negotiates the terms of the EU exit. This means that diesel exhaust fluid will remain a legal requirement. There is also the possibility that the UK will still have to follow EU pollutant regulations as part of the exit deal, so it’s better to continue using AdBlue for the next few years at least.

Other than the EU regulations, there are also environmental rules set by the UK government. These rules were last reviewed in 2007, which means that another review could be imminent when EU negotiations take place. Ultimately, it looks likely that diesel exhaust fluid will remain a legal requirement, so it is best to continue using it.
