Toxic air pollution and dementia linked? Get your AdBlue today

An interesting story has hit the media this morning, after a new study has revealed that air pollution could be responsible for 60,000 cases of dementia in the UK. Those living in areas with the highest levels of nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere were 40 percent more likely to develop dementia.

It’s said that researchers from King’s College London and St George’s University of London have found the most robust piece of evidence yet, which supports the notion that toxic fumes could be linked to the disease.

The particular culprits are nitrogen dioxide and sooty smog released from old diesel cars, with one in fourteen cases thought to be caused by air pollution.

Professor Kelly, of King’s College London and a government adviser on air pollution, said: ‘This is a very serious problem. The more we look at all the chronic diseases in society, the more air pollution crops up as a recurring factor.

“We’re not saying air pollution is the only cause of dementia. But by tackling air pollution, even if you merely delayed the onset of dementia, that would be of enormous benefit for families and the health service.”

Aaron Kiely, air pollution campaigner at Friends of the Earth said: “Efforts to clean up our cars, vans and lorries must be put in the fast lane – we can’t afford to wait until 2040 for most new vehicles to be zero-emission,” he said. “Greater investment is also needed in alternatives to motor vehicles, such as safer cycling infrastructure, and affordable and convenient public transport.”

Help reduce harmful nitrogen oxides with AdBlue

AdBlue (AUS32) is becoming increasingly more popular after the government has put increasing pressure on car manufacturers to help reduce harmful emissions from exhausts.

Vehicles with Euro IV, V, VI (4, 5 and 6) have a designated tank fitted to store AdBlue and it is a legal requirement to use the fluid. But it isn’t required for every diesel car yet. If your car has been made after 2016 and is from Jaguar, Land Rover, a German or French manufacturer it’s most likely it takes AdBlue.

With the new findings in mind and many of our customers living in the highly polluted London area, the importance of using AdBlue in our diesel engines is heightened.

How does AdBlue work?

The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) helps reduce these harmful emissions released through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Harmful exhaust stream gases such as nitrogen dioxide are converted into inert products that leave a clean exhaust stream of water vapour, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Speedy Fuels’ AdBlue is of ISO22241 standard which is analysed for your peace of mind. We can deliver to anywhere across the UK, from as little as 10 litres right up to large bulk orders.
